Before Us, Always Just Beyond

Author | Lana Bella

before us,
always just beyond,
the peach amethyst
skipping the briny shanty
above our skin ruffling
out in pleats of fluid indigo--
and so we put further
out to sea, floating
between chirping notes
of Tropicbirds,
time-poised island ferries
and conjugal lullabies
of crunching water--
snatch the clouds down
with our fingers
trembling the eaves
of sunrise,
we press our breaths to
the pneumatic maelstrom
wreathed by darting
wings pulsing blood to
our ears--
